Hawai'i Preparatory Academy: Nurturing Excellence Amidst Island Splendor

Nestled in the picturesque town of Kamuela on Hawai'i Island, Hawai'i Preparatory Academy (HPA) stands as a beacon of educational excellence, seamlessly blending rigorous academics with the rich cultural tapestry of the Hawaiian archipelago. Established in 1949 by The Right Reverend Harry S. Kennedy, HPA has evolved into a distinguished coeducational, private day, and boarding school, serving approximately 600 students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

A Holistic Approach to Education

At the heart of HPA's philosophy lies a commitment to providing exceptional learning opportunities within a diverse community that honors Hawaiian traditions. The academy offers a robust college-preparatory curriculum, enriched by student-driven, project-based learning. This approach encourages students to engage deeply with their studies, fostering critical thinking and a genuine passion for knowledge. The school's unique Capstone program invites students in grades 5, 8, and 12 to undertake independent projects, allowing them to explore their interests and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

State-of-the-Art Facilities in a Breathtaking Setting

HPA's campus is a harmonious blend of modern facilities and the island's natural beauty. The Energy Lab, an award-winning facility, serves as a hub for sustainable research and innovation, reflecting the school's dedication to environmental stewardship. Athletic facilities, including a large heated pool, tennis courts, and expansive fields, support a wide range of sports and physical activities. The Isaacs Art Center provides a space for artistic exploration, housing galleries and studios that inspire creativity among students.

Excellence in Athletics and the Arts

HPA offers a comprehensive athletics program, fielding 22 teams across 16 interscholastic sports. Students can participate in traditional sports such as soccer, basketball, and swimming, as well as unique offerings like equestrian sports and water polo. The academy's commitment to the arts is equally robust, with programs in theatre, visual arts, digital media, and music. These programs are designed to nurture creativity and self-expression, providing students with numerous opportunities to showcase their talents.

Innovative Programs and Environmental Stewardship

HPA's signature programs reflect its commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship. The Sea Turtle Research Program, established in 1987, has engaged over 2,200 students in hands-on conservation efforts, working alongside organizations like NOAA to study and protect marine life. The Energy Lab offers students the opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research on sustainability and renewable energy, fostering a culture of environmental responsibility.

A Legacy of Achievement

The academy's dedication to excellence is evident in its numerous accolades and the accomplishments of its alumni. HPA is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and the Hawai'i Association of Independent Schools, underscoring its commitment to maintaining high educational standards. Notable alumni include Laura Jim '91, co-director of HPA's Sea Turtle Research Program; Ford Stallsmith '20, who exemplifies the academy's athletic excellence; and Jim Kennedy, class of 1966, whose philanthropic efforts have significantly contributed to the school's development.
